Mento, Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae and Dub

A day of Mento Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae and Dub: A musical celebration of the Jamaican people, artists and instrumentalists who shaped the scene.

Shoemakers Museum welcomes Bridgwater’s Red Shadow Sound System and its veteran all-vinyl DJ Dave Chapple, for a celebration of Jamaican music from way back in 1950 through to 1980.

More than a music session, this is also a deep dive into the songs and tunes, the singers and instrumentalists, that shaped tracks that conquered the musical world from the West-Indian island of Jamaica.

Dave will be playing throughout the day on Wednesday 27 May from 10.30am to 4pm. Join us for two special 75-minute sessions, starting at 11am and 2.30pm, when Dave will talk about-or DJ talk over- the tunes he spins.

These musical talks are family friendly and suitable for all ages including children – each talk will last for 75 minutes and are free for annual pass holders.

Pull up a chair, or tune in and sashay away with the music! Spaces are limited at each talk, so come early if you want to secure a seat.

The event is free for museum ticket holders. Spend the lunchtime, afternoon or all day with us at Shoemakers Museum and enjoy feel-good Jamaican vibes at Shoemakers Café and museum garden. We’ll also be offering Caribbean Flavours in the café the menu will offer something for everyone!

Dance, relax or challenge the family to a round of lawn games while the music plays.

This event is part of a May holiday week on the theme of International Connections with activities in the learning space and a new trail around the museum.
