This Spring half-term holiday, Shoemakers Museum is shining a spotlight on the rich international threads woven through our small Somerset village. Throughout the May holiday, we’ll be exploring the global journeys, unexpected connections and remarkable individuals whose stories touch Somerset and stretch all the way to Jamaica and beyond with our new museum trail and crafting activities.

May is local history month and our local history is rich with  wonderful stories of global connection.

Creative Activities Rooted in Identity and Place

Families, friends and lone explorers can take part in hands‑on craft sessions where you can create your own postcard – will you send it from Shoemakers, from a far-flung country,  how far can you imagine?!

A day celebrating the music of Jamaica

MENTO, SKA, ROCK STREADY, REGGAE AND DUB: A musical celebration of the Jamaican People.

Wednesday 27^th May 10.30am – 4pm

Shoemakers Museum welcomes Bridgwater’s Red Shadow Sound System and its veteran all-vinyl DJ Dave Chapple, for a celebration of Jamaican music from way back in 1950 through to 1980.

Dave will be playing throughout the day from 10.30am to 4pm. With special sessions at 11.30 and 1pm DJing and talking about the music, artists and instrumentalists who shaped the music scene.

This is a family friendly celebration with opportunities to drop in, dance, listen, relax and enjoy music, games and a taste of the Caribbean in Shoemakers Cafe.
