Thursdays are fossils finds days at Shoemakers this August

Two more of our popular Fossil Thursdays this Summer on 6th and 20th August when we will be joined by the Earth Science Centre for fossil handling sessions, local geology and activities that celebrate the ancient Somerset landscape.

200m years ago sea dragons lived, hunted and swam through the ancient seas which once covered Somerset. Giant marine reptiles called Ichthyosaurs called this place home, and their fossils were uncovered in the famous Blue Lias rock layer that runs under the shoe factories in Street all the way to the Jurassic Coast.  Alfred Gillett, a member of the Clarks family and an avid collector of fossils is responsible for the specimens on display at Shoemakers Museum.
