Fantastic Fossils – February half-term fun

Discover the sea dragons of Street

Try your hand as a fossil hunter and discover the sea dragons of Street with a series of fossil-themed family friendly activities planned for this half term 14-22 February.

Dive into pre-history this February half term!

• Create your own moving ichthyosaur inspired by the incredible fossils found right here in the local landscape.
• Set off on a trail and discover how the Sea Dragons of Street would have lived, hunted and swam through the ancient seas which once covered Somerset.
• Get crafty with a Dino edit of our Making with Me workshop with artist Katherine O’Shea on Sunday 15 February at 11am. Booking is required for this workshop £6 one adult and child, £3.50 per extra adult, and £2.50 per extra child.
• Dig deep this half term and show us your fossil finds. On Friday 20^th February at 11am bring along your favourite fossil finds for an informal ID and handle some specimens!
• Deep dive into the world of ichthyosaurs with our interactive storytelling sessions on Saturday 21 February at 11am and 1pm.

Discover the Ichthyosaurs! As well a gallery full of fossil specimens to explore, there will be trails through the museum, interactive storytelling,  opportunities to create your own moving ichthyosaur, experience handing some fossil samples from the collection and bring along your favourite fossil finds for an informal ID session.

Crafting activities and trails are suitable for 5 to 11 year olds, but we know fossils are fun for everyone, so everyone is welcome to come along and join in.

200m years ago sea dragons lived, hunted and swam through the ancient seas which once covered Somerset. Giant marine reptiles called Ichthyosaurs called this place home, and their fossils were uncovered in the famous Blue Lias rock layer that runs under the shoe factories in Street all the way to the Jurassic Coast. We’re celebrating this remarkable collection of fossils going on display with an extra long week of fossil-themed fun happening at the museum this February half term.
